"Back pain" is common in horses, especially thoroughbreds and riding horses. Many soft tissue injuries and bone disorders are correlated with ?back pain?. Diagnosis is based on clinical examination possibly confirmed by x-ray and scintigraphy when available. Currently the most common treatments are local injection of steroids or systemic administration of steroids or NSAIDs.We studied 30 riding horses treated by local infiltration of O2-O3 administered in two sessions ten days apart. Despite our small cohort, the successful results show that O2-O3 therapy can be considered a valid alternative to current drug management protocols.

Although orthodox medicine has provided a variety of topical anti-infective agents, some of them have become scarcely effective owing to antibiotic- and chemotherapeutic-resistant pathogens. For more than a century, ozone has been known to be an excellent disinfectant that nevertheless had to be used with caution for its oxidizing properties. Only during the last decade it has been learned how to tame its great reactivity by precisely dosing its concentration and permanently incorporating the gas into triglycerides where gaseous ozone chemically reacts with unsaturated substrates leading to therapeutically active ozonated derivatives. Today the stability and efficacy of the ozonated oils have been already demonstrated, but owing to a plethora of commercial products, the present paper aims to analyze these derivatives suggesting the strategy to obtain products with the best characteristics.

PURPOSE: To determine statistically significant effects of oxygen/ozone treatment of herniated discs with respect to pain, function, and complication rate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Random-effects metaanalyses were used to estimate outcomes for oxygen/ozone treatment of herniated discs. A literature search provided relevant studies that were weighted by a study quality score. Separate metaanalyses were performed for visual analog scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and modified MacNab outcome scales, as well as for complication rate. Institutional review board approval was not required for this retrospective analysis. RESULTS: Twelve studies were included in the metaanalyses. The inclusion/exclusion criteria, patient demographics, clinical trial rankings, treatment procedures, outcome measures, and complications are summarized. Metaanalyses were performed on the oxygen/ozone treatment results for almost 8,000 patients from multiple centers. The mean improvement was 3.9 for VAS and 25.7 for ODI. The likelihood of showing improvement on the modified MacNab scale was 79.7%. The means for the VAS and ODI outcomes are well above the minimum clinically important difference and the minimum (significant) detectable change. The likelihood of complications was 0.064%. CONCLUSIONS: Oxygen/ozone treatment of herniated discs is an effective and extremely safe procedure. The estimated improvement in pain and function is impressive in view of the broad inclusion criteria, which included patients ranging in age from 13 to 94 years with all types of disc herniations. Pain and function outcomes are similar to the outcomes for lumbar discs treated with surgical discectomy, but the complication rate is much lower (<0.1%) and the recovery time is significantly shorter.

Redox environment involves a broad network of pro-oxidant and antioxidant components. Health benefit or damage can be induced as a consequence of an adaptive cellular stress response. A consequence of hormetic amplification is an increase in the homeodynamic space of a living system in terms of an increased defense capacity and a reduced load of damaged macromolecules. Ozone, when used at appropriate doses, promotes the formation of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxides allows them to become late and long-lasting messengers. Healthy aging may be achieved by hormesis through mild and periodic, but not severe or chronic, physical and mental challenges, and by the use of nutritional hormesis incorporating mild stress-inducing molecules called hormetins. The paradoxical concept that ozone eventually induces an antioxidant response capable of reversing a chronic oxidative stress is common in the animal and vegetal kingdom; it is already supported by findings of an increased level of antioxidant enzymes during ozone therapy. Those facts can include ozone as a hormetin. The established scientific foundations of hormesis are ready to pave the way for new and effective approaches in redoxrelated disease research and intervention; ozone therapy can be a good candidate.

Ozone has recently been subjected to criticism and emphasis in relation to clinical efficacy and toxicity, respectively. Without a doubt, ozone, in common with oxygen itself, is one of the most potent oxidants. Ozone is considered one of the major pollutants in urban areas. Nevertheless, increasingly widespread use lately has highlighted the potential benefits as a therapeutic agent when used according to well-defined and safe protocols. Basic studies conducted following rigorous scientific and ethical criteria have been proposed for scientific discussion. This paper concerns original data on an in vivo model of Parkinson?s disease and published data on the effect of low ozone doses with any risk of toxicity excluded with the concentrations commonly used in medical applications.

Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) is a pleiotropic mitogen which plays an important role in cell growth, differentiation, migration, and survival in different cells and organ systems. Application of bFGF has been shown to promote cellular proliferation and collagen synthesis in vivo. FGF is markedly up-regulated following bone or tendon injury and are active at multiple stages of the healing process stimulation, of local blood circulation, lipolisis and smooth muscle. Looking at physic and chemical properties of the ozone molecule, the present work deals the possible therapeutic action as a FGF activator. Incubation (2 h) of platelet rich plasma with O2/O3 80 ?g/mL increases in approximately 600% the basal concentration of FGF. This fact in combination with previous demonstration of the stimulating action of O3, releasing other platelet factors may potentially possible the autologous treatment in aesthetic and clinical tissues conditions in which FGF has a protagonist role. The versatility and amplitude of beneficial effect of ozone has become evident in orthopedics, cutaneous and mucosal infections as well as in dentistry, the induction of FGF and other growth factors by ozone can support and potentiate those applications.
